Advantages
Why choose college? If increasing your knowledge and potential isn't enough, what
about having more job opportunities to choose from and more money to spend? The world is
changing rapidly and many jobs already require more brains than muscle. With a college
education, you will have more job opportunities available to you. Consider this: in 1994,
a person with a college degree from a four-year college earned approximately $12,500 more
in that year than a person who didn't. An increase was also reported for graduates of
two-year colleges as opposed to high school graduates.Colleges
There are two types of colleges: a community college (two-year college) and a
university. A community college, such as Pensacola
Junior College, offers education and training which leads to a license, certificate,
associates of arts (A.A.) or associates of science (A.A.S.) degrees.
A university, such as University of West Florida or Pensacola Christian College, usually offers
four-year degrees like bachelor of arts (B.A.) or a bachelor of science (B.S.) degrees.
Some even offer professional or graduate degrees beyond four years.
Admission and Registration
Whichever college you choose, you will have to apply. Different colleges have
different requirements and tests necessary for acceptance. Contact the college you desire
for specific information. After you have been accepted and tested, you should consult an
advisor about the best strategy for you to obtain your degree. Your advisor can help you
fill out the necessary forms and register for classes.
Financial Aid
Many parents are regretfully unable to pay their child's way though college, but
that shouldn't stop anyone from obtaining a college education. If you are a working
student, check to see if your employer has a program that pays for employee college
expenses. Other alternatives include scholarships which are usually achievement driven and
grants which are usually need driven. Contact your college's Financial Aid Department for
more information on the latter and visit www.finaid.org
for other options. You can also search for available scholarships at www.fastweb.com.
Terms
Most colleges have four terms a year:
Spring term, which begins in early January;
Summer A term, which usually begins in early May;
Summer B term, which usually begins in early June and a
Fall term, which usually begins in mid-to-late August.
Contact the desired college for a registration schedule.
